Massey Ferguson 06.0.04 – HITCH: Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit (Hitch)
Issue description
The control unit has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit responsible for engaging the Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid. The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a failed solenoid coil. When this code is active, the PTO may hesitate, fail to engage, or fail to disengage.

Check the cause
Inspect the PTO solenoid electrical connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture ingress.
Trace the wiring harness from the solenoid back toward the HITCH controller. Look for common harness rub points, melted insulation, or broken wires that could cause an open circuit or short to ground.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the PTO solenoid coil pins. An infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit (blown coil), while a reading near zero indicates an internal short.
With the tractor and key turned off, disconnect the solenoid connector. Briefly apply 12 volts directly to the solenoid terminals. You should hear a distinct click as the valve actuates. If it does not click, the solenoid is dead.
Verify that the ground circuit returning to the controller or chassis is clean and tight.
Repair steps
Park and relieve pressure
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate solenoid valve
Locate the PTO hydraulic solenoid valve. On most applicable models, this is located on the transmission control valve block or on top of the rear hitch/differential housing.
Disconnect harness
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the PTO solenoid.
Remove retaining nut
Remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid coil.
Remove old coil
Slide the old solenoid coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge. (Note: If the hydraulic valve itself is sticking, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge valve from the block, but electrical circuit codes usually only require replacing the coil).
Install new coil
Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks firmly into place.
Clear DTC
Turn on the tractor and use a specialized diagnostic tool to clear the 06.0.04 DTC from the HITCH controller.
Test operation
Test the PTO engagement from the cab to ensure smooth operation.
