Massey Ferguson 06.0.4E – HITCH: Issue With PTO Stub Shaft 1000 (HITCH)

This code indicates a fault related to the 1000 RPM PTO stub shaft. It triggers when the system detects an irregularity with the 1000 RPM shaft—such as a missing signal from the inductive speed sensor, a mismatch between engine speed and PTO output speed, or a failure of the sensor that detects the physical presence of the 1000 RPM stub shaft.

   Ensure the 1000 RPM (21-spline) stub shaft is fully seated and locked into the rear axle housing

   Inspect the PTO speed inductive sensor wiring harness and connector for chafing, rodent damage, or looseness

   Remove the stub shaft and clean the mounting area, as the inductive sensor can become blinded by heavy metallic sludge or debris

   Verify if the PTO is slipping under load, as a slipping PTO clutch will cause the sensor to read a lower-than-expected RPM

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, lower any attached implements, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Remove the Stub Shaft

   Remove the retaining snap ring or the PTO shaft studs (M10 x 20 Torx bolts) holding the PTO stub shaft in place. Carefully slide the PTO shaft horizontally out of the rear axle.

   Inspect the Shaft

   Check the internal splines and the sensor target area on the stub shaft for excessive wear or damage.

   Replace the Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed inductive sensor on the housing. Disconnect the electrical plug, unthread/unbolt the old sensor, and install the new one. Ensure the sensor is seated to the correct depth so it can read the shaft without making physical contact.

   Reassembly

   Lubricate the seals and slide the 1000 RPM PTO stub shaft back into the housing, ensuring the internal splines align perfectly. Secure it with the retaining bolts/studs (torque to OEM spec).

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 06.0.4E DTC from the HITCH module, then test the PTO engagement at 1000 RPM to verify the repair.
