Massey Ferguson 06.00.07 – HITCH or TRANS1: Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit (Hitch)
Issue description
Triggered when the onboard diagnostic system detects an electrical irregularity in the circuit that controls the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement. The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power in the solenoid wiring or the coil itself. When this occurs, the PTO may hesitate, fail to engage, or fail to disengage.

Check the cause
Inspect the electrical connector at the PTO solenoid for dirt, corrosion, or loose pins
Check the wiring harness leading to the transmission/hitch area for rub points, frayed wires, or breaks that could cause an open circuit or short to ground
Test the solenoid coil resistance with a multimeter (with tractor off), or briefly apply 12V directly to the coil to see if it actuates (clicks)
Verify the tractor's battery circuit output and ensure ground integrity to the module
Check the hydraulic fluid to ensure it is clean and at the proper level, as dirty or low fluid can mimic electrical engagement issues
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, relieve all hydraulic system pressure, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Valve
Find the PTO hydraulic solenoid valve, which typically mounts to the transmission housing where the hydraulic lines connect to the PTO clutch system (or on top of the hitch valve block).
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid coil. (Note: Newer replacement coils have the connector built directly into the coil body, whereas older designs may have two wires pigtailing out of them).
Remove the Solenoid
Unbolt and remove the faulty solenoid valve from the housing. Be prepared with a catch pan for a small amount of hydraulic fluid loss.
Install the New Part
Install the new solenoid valve, ensuring any O-rings or seals are properly seated to handle hydraulic pressure.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery. Start the tractor and cycle the up/down switches to clear any safety lockouts, then test the PTO engagement.
