Check the cause

  1. Check the 540 PTO button on the armrest/console for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing it from making a clean contact.

  2. Using a multimeter, test the PTO 540 switch for proper continuity when pressed and released. If the switch does not show a clear open/closed state, it has failed internally.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness running from the PTO switch panel to the TRANS1 module. Look for chafed wires, pinched lines, or loose/corroded pins at the connector block.

  4. Verify that the switch is receiving the correct reference voltage from the TRANS1 module to rule out a short to ground or short to power in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Switch

Carefully pry up or unscrew the PTO control panel/armrest bezel where the 540 PTO button is housed.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the faulty PTO switch.

  4. Remove and Replace

Depress the retaining tabs on the side of the switch body to push it out of the console panel. Snap the new OEM switch into place.

  5. Reassemble

Reconnect the wiring harness to the new switch and reinstall the console panel.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a specialized Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the stored 06.00.13 DTC from the TRANS1 module.

  7. Test Operation

Start the tractor and engage the 540 PTO to verify the signal is recognized and the PTO clutch engages smoothly without throwing a code.
