06.00.4C

Massey Ferguson 06.00.4C – HITCH: Issue With PTO Over Speed Compared To Engine Speed. (HITCH)

Issue description

Triggers when the tractor's computer receives data indicating that the Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft is spinning at an RPM higher than what is physically possible or expected based on the current engine speed. This almost always points to a failing PTO speed inductive sensor sending erratic, falsely high readings to the computer.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the PTO speed sensor for corrosion, moisture ingress, or chafed wires that could cause a short.

  2. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool to determine if the code is a hard fault or an intermittent glitch.

  3. Remove the sensor and inspect the internal tone wheel for physical damage, missing teeth, or heavy debris buildup that can distort the magnetic field.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the PTO speed inductive sensor. It is typically mounted on the rear PTO output shaft bearing support housing.

  3. Remove the Old Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Unbolt and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new inductive sensor into the port. Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Test

Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear any remaining fault codes, and engage the PTO. Verify that the cab display shows steady, accurate RPM readings that match the engine tachometer without throwing the 06.00.4C code.
