Massey Ferguson 06.01.02 – TRANS1: Issue With Signal From Right External Rear PTO On/Off Button

Issue description

The controller is detecting an invalid, missing, or shorted signal from the PTO switch located on the right rear mudguard/fender. When active, the external PTO button will not function and the PTO will disengage. As a failsafe, the PTO can only be switched on or off using the main cab button by pressing and holding it for at least 5 seconds.

Check the cause

  1. Perform an in-cab override test by holding the main cab PTO button for 5 seconds to verify the PTO engages, isolating the issue to the external switch circuit.

  2. Visually inspect the right rear mudguard PTO switch for physical damage, cracked rubber seals, or water ingress.

  3. Unplug the connector at the back of the switch and check for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture.

  4. Perform a continuity test on the switch using a multimeter (normally closed configuration); verify it shows continuity at rest and breaks continuity when pressed.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical arcing or accidental PTO engagement.

  2. Access the Switch

Locate the faulty PTO switch on the right rear mudguard/fender.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the back of the switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

Remove the retaining hardware or bezel securing the switch to the mudguard and pull the switch out.

  5. Install the New Switch

Insert the replacement switch into the mudguard housing. Ensure the weather-sealing rubber boot is properly seated to prevent future water ingress.

  6. Reconnect Wiring

Plug the electrical connector into the new switch. Route the wiring neatly and secure it to prevent chafing against the fender or tire.

  7. Test Operation

Reconnect the battery. Test the PTO engagement using both the in-cab button and the newly installed right external button to ensure the fault code has cleared and normal operation is restored.
