Massey Ferguson 06.01.06 – TRANS1 / HITCH: Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit (Hitch) / Issue With Rear PTO On/Off Solenoid Power Supply

Issue description

Indicates an electrical fault—such as an open circuit, short to ground, or overcurrent condition—in the wiring or the solenoid coil that controls the engagement of the rear Power Take-Off (PTO). When this code is triggered, the controller cannot properly command the PTO solenoid valve, which may result in the PTO failing to engage, failing to disengage, or the tractor disabling the PTO to prevent damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check system voltage to ensure the battery is fully charged and grounds are clean, as low voltage during operation can cause the controller to drop the solenoid circuit and throw false codes.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors from the PTO solenoid (usually on top of the rear axle/hitch housing) back to the TRANS1/HITCH module for chafed wires, vibration damage, or moisture/dirt ingress.

  3. Test the solenoid coil by applying 12 volts directly to the coil pins to listen for a definitive 'click' of the valve actuating.

  4. Test the coil's resistance with a multimeter to check for an internal open or short circuit.

  5. Verify that the fuses and relays supplying power to the PTO and transmission control circuits are intact.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the system to cool.

  2. Depressurize

    Ensure the hydraulic system is fully depressurized.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the PTO solenoid valve (top of the rear housing) to prevent dirt from falling into the hydraulic circuit when the valve is removed.

  4. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.

  5. Removal

    Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the solenoid valve to the housing block. Carefully pull the valve out.

  6. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic oil. Insert the new valve into the block, ensuring it seats properly without pinching the O-rings.

  7. Secure

    Reinstall the retaining screws. Apply a thread locker like Loctite 542 to the threads and torque to specification, generally around 50-70 Nm depending on the exact bolt size.

  8. Reconnect & Test

    Plug the electrical connector back in. Clear the 06.01.06 fault code using a diagnostic tool, start the tractor, and test the PTO engagement. Check for hydraulic leaks around the mating surface.
