Massey Ferguson 06.01.09 – TRANS1 (Transmission Module 1): Issue With PTO Circuit (Hitch) / PTO Switch Is On But The PTO Is Not Turning

Issue description

The tractor's control system has registered a command to engage the Power Take-Off (PTO) via the cabin switch, but the system detects that the PTO shaft is not physically rotating. This points to an open circuit, a failed engagement solenoid, a faulty switch, or a hydraulic/mechanical failure preventing the PTO clutch pack from engaging.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Complaint: Turn on the PTO switch. Listen for the PTO solenoid clicking and observe if the shaft spins at all.

  2. Check the PTO Switch: Test the cabin rocker switch for continuity. A broken internal contact can send erratic signals to the TRANS1 module.

  3. Test the PTO Solenoid Valve: Locate the PTO engagement solenoid on the transmission valve block. Test the coil resistance with a multimeter. If it reads an open circuit (infinite resistance) regardless of lead polarity, the internal wire is broken.

  4. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the harness between the PTO switch, the TRANS1 module, and the PTO solenoid. Look for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion, especially where the harness routes near the hitch and rear axles.

  5. Check Hydraulic Pressure: If the electrical circuit (switch, module, solenoid) is functioning perfectly, connect a pressure gauge to the PTO clutch test port. If pressure is low, the issue is hydraulic (e.g., pump, internal leaks, or clutch pack failure).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits during electrical testing.

  2. Replace the Switch (If Faulty)

Carefully pry the PTO rocker switch out of the side console. Disconnect the 3-pin connector. Plug in the new switch and snap it back into the console.

  3. Replace the Solenoid (If Faulty)

Clean the area around the PTO solenoid valve on the transmission housing to prevent dirt ingress. Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Unscrew the retaining nut/bolt and slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem (or remove the entire cartridge valve if replacing the whole unit). Install the new solenoid/valve, torque to OEM spec, and reconnect the harness.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 06.01.09 code from the TRANS1 module.

  5. Test Operation

Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and verify that the shaft turns smoothly and the code does not return.
