Massey Ferguson 06.01.E6 – TRANS1: Issue With Values Received From Rear PTO Speed Sensors Dyna VT (TRANS1)

The transmission control system is receiving erratic, missing, or out-of-range RPM signals from the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) speed sensor. The magnetic sensing design reads a tone wheel to determine the PTO shaft speed; when the signal drops out or fluctuates unexpectedly, the system logs this code and may disable PTO functions to prevent damage.

   Wiring and Connector Inspection: Check the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO speed sensor for chafing, breaks, or short circuits. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Tone Wheel Inspection: Remove the sensor and look through the mounting hole to inspect the internal tone wheel. Check for damaged teeth or a buildup of metallic debris/sludge that could disrupt the magnetic sensor's readings.

   Air Gap Verification: Ensure the sensor is threaded in correctly. Proper spacing (air gap) between the sensor tip and the tone wheel is critical for accurate speed readings.

   Live Data Test: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the PTO speed sensor output while engaging the PTO at different speeds to see if the signal drops out intermittently.

   Locate the Sensor

   The rear PTO speed sensor is threaded into the rear transmission/PTO housing, in close proximity to the PTO output shaft.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.

   Remove

   Unthread the faulty sensor from the housing. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission/hydraulic fluid may weep from the port.

   Clean and Inspect

   Clean the mounting threads on the housing. Visually inspect the tone wheel inside the housing for debris.

   Install

   Thread the new OEM sensor into the mount. Ensure it is tightened to the correct depth to maintain the required air gap.

   Reconnect

   Plug the tractor's wiring harness back into the sensor.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 06.01.E6 fault code from the TRANS1 module.

   Test

   Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and cycle it through different speeds to verify that the display shows steady, accurate RPM readings and the code does not return.
