Massey Ferguson 06.02.08 – HITCH or TRANS1: The Engine RPM Has Dropped Too Much When The PTO Was Engaged.
Issue description
Triggered by the tractor's Anti-Stall Function. When the Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch is engaged, the control module monitors the engine speed. If the system detects an excessive or sudden drop in engine RPM that risks stalling the engine, it logs this fault code. This is typically caused by a harsh PTO clutch engagement, a seized/heavy implement, or faulty speed sensor data.

Check the cause
Disconnect the PTO shaft from the implement and engage the PTO to check if the implement is jammed or too heavy for the starting RPM.
Ensure the engine is running at a sufficient RPM before engaging the PTO to prevent triggering the anti-stall function.
Check the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and filters, as low fluid or blocked filters can cause erratic hydraulic pressure to the PTO clutch.
Check the live data for the Engine Speed Sensor and the PTO Speed Sensor to verify if the PTO speed sensor drops out or sends erratic resistance readings.
Repair steps
Isolate the Tractor
Unhook any implements. Start the tractor, raise the RPM slightly, and engage the PTO. If the code still triggers with no load, the issue is internal to the tractor's sensors or clutch control.
Calibrate the PTO Clutch
Use the Datatronic screen or dealer diagnostic software to perform a PTO clutch calibration. This adjusts the hydraulic fill time of the clutch packs to ensure a smooth, gradual engagement.
Inspect Wiring
Check the wiring harness leading to the PTO speed sensor (usually located on the rear PTO housing) and the PTO clutch solenoid valve. Look for chafing, loose pins, or corrosion.
Test/Replace the PTO Speed Sensor
Test the PTO speed sensor resistance (a healthy sensor typically reads around 540 Ohms depending on the exact part). If it is out of spec or physically damaged, replace it.
Inspect/Replace the PTO Solenoid Valve
If the engagement remains harsh after calibration, the PTO clutch solenoid valve may be sticking open due to internal wear or hydraulic contamination. Remove the valve, check for debris, and replace it if it fails to cycle smoothly.
Clear Codes
Clear the 06.02.08 code from the HITCH or TRANS1 module and test the PTO under a normal load.
