Massey Ferguson 06.02.09 – Transmission Module 1 (TRANS1): PTO Switch Is On But The PTO Is Not Turning

The control module has registered that the operator engaged the PTO switch in the cab, but the PTO speed sensor is failing to detect any rotational speed from the PTO shaft.

   Verify the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and condition. Low or heavily contaminated fluid can prevent the hydraulic PTO clutch from engaging properly.

   Inspect the wiring harnesses connecting the cab PTO switch, the TRANS1 module, the PTO speed sensor, and the PTO solenoid valve. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Test the PTO speed sensor with a multimeter. On many of these models, a healthy PTO speed sensor should read approximately 540 ohms of resistance.

   Test the PTO solenoid valve to check if the transmission PTO hydraulic solenoid is receiving voltage when the switch is engaged. If it receives power but the PTO still hesitates or fails to engage, the solenoid valve is likely stuck or burnt out.

   Prepare tractor for service

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Relieve hydraulic pressure

   Relieve any residual hydraulic system pressure before servicing transmission or hydraulic components.

   Replace PTO Speed Sensor

   Locate the sensor on the transmission housing. Disconnect the electrical pigtail, unthread the old sensor, and thread in the new replacement. Reconnect the wiring harness.

   Replace PTO Solenoid Valve

   Locate the PTO control valve block on the transmission housing where the hydraulic lines connect to the PTO clutch system. Remove the retaining hardware holding the faulty solenoid. Swap in the new solenoid valve, ensuring that all O-rings and seals are seated correctly to prevent hydraulic leaks.

   Restore power and fluid

   Reconnect the battery and top off the hydraulic fluid if any was lost during the solenoid replacement.

   Clear fault code

   Use a specialized Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 06.02.09 DTC from the TRANS1 module.

   Test operation

   Start the tractor and test-operate the PTO with an implement to confirm smooth engagement and that the code does not return.
