Massey Ferguson 06.02.4C – HITCH: Issue With PTO Over Speed Compared To Engine Speed.

The system has detected a mismatch where the Power Take-Off (PTO) speed sensor is reporting a rotational speed that is higher than physically possible based on the current engine speed and PTO gear ratio. This almost always points to an electrical fault, such as a failing PTO speed sensor sending erratic/high-frequency pulses, a short in the wiring harness, or metal debris interfering with the magnetic sensor tip.

   Visual Inspection: Check the PTO speed sensor wiring harness and connector at the rear axle for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections.

   Sensor Tip Inspection: Remove the PTO speed sensor and check the magnetic tip. Metal shavings from the transmission/PTO clutch can accumulate on the sensor, causing erratic speed readings. Clean it and retest.

   Resistance Test: Test the sensor's internal resistance with a multimeter (e.g., 4359947M1 should read approximately 540 Ohms).

   Software Diagnostics: Use Massey Ferguson's Wintest diagnostic software (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic screen) to monitor the live PTO speed sensor output against the engine speed sensor output while running.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed sensor, which is mounted on the rear axle/PTO housing assembly.

   Disconnect

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

   Clean and Prep

   Wipe away any oil or debris from the mounting port.

   Install

   Insert the new OEM PTO speed sensor, thread the retaining bolt, and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard menu to clear the 06.02.4C DTC code and test-run the PTO to ensure the speed reads accurately.
