Massey Ferguson 06.03.09 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): PTO Switch Is On But The PTO Is Not Turning Dyna 6 (TRANS1)

This code indicates a discrepancy between the operator's command and the mechanical output. The transmission controller has registered that the PTO switch in the cab is engaged, but it is receiving no rotational speed signal from the PTO output shaft or PTO clutch speed sensors.

   Connect the tractor to the Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software and monitor live data for the PTO speed sensor and PTO clutch speed sensor.

   Physically verify if the PTO shaft is turning when the switch is engaged. If it is turning but reads 0 RPM, the issue is electrical. If it is NOT turning, the issue is hydraulic or mechanical.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the PTO speed sensor and the Autotronic 5 ECU for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or corrosion.

   If the shaft is not turning (hydraulic/mechanical cause), check the PTO clutch control pressure. The multidisc hydraulic clutch typically requires around 21 bar of control pressure to engage.

   Park and Prep

   Position the tractor on flat ground, engage the parking brake, and ensure the transmission oil temperature is at normal operating levels (between 35°C/95°F and 45°C/113°F).

   Test the Sensor

   Using a multimeter or oscilloscope, check the resistance and signal output of the inductive PTO speed sensor while the engine is running and the PTO is commanded on.

   Inspect the Harness

   Trace the wiring from the PTO speed sensor back to the TRANS1 (Autotronic 5) module. Repair any chafed wires or replace damaged connector pins.

   Replace the Sensor (If Faulty)

   If Wintest software and electrical testing confirm the sensor is dead, remove the retaining bolt for the PTO speed sensor on the transmission housing, pull the old sensor, lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor, and install it.

   Check PTO Solenoid/Clutch (If Mechanical)

   If the sensor is fine but the shaft physically won't spin, locate the PTO engagement solenoid on the transmission valve block. Test it for proper operation. If the solenoid works, the internal PTO clutch pack may require a rebuild.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the diagnostic tool, clear fault code 06.03.09 from the TRANS1 module, and test the PTO under load to verify the repair.
