Massey Ferguson 06.03.49 – TRANS2: There Is A Speed Reading from The PTO Speed Sensor That Does Not Match The Speed Selected Switch Dyna 6 (TRANS2)

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting a discrepancy between the physical speed of the Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft (read by the PTO speed sensor) and the expected speed based on the operator's selected PTO switch position and engine RPM.

Check the cause

  1. Check for mechanical overload causing the PTO clutch to slip (ensure the PTO-driven implement is operating properly and not jammed)

  2. Connect Wintest diagnostic software and monitor live PTO speed sensor values against engine speed while the PTO is engaged

  3. Perform a multimeter resistance test on the PTO speed sensor while the tractor is stationary to check for an internal short or open circuit

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the PTO speed sensor and the TRANS2 module for damage

  5. Verify the engine RPM signal coming from the alternator is correct, as the controller relies on this to calculate PTO clutch slip

Repair steps

  1. Reduce Load

    If the diagnostic phase reveals that the implement load is excessive, reduce the load, clear the fault codes, and return the unit to field operation to see if the code returns.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the multimeter test shows good sensor resistance but no signal reaches the controller, locate and repair any breaks, corrosion, or shorts in the wiring harness connecting the PTO speed sensor to the TRANS2 module.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If the PTO speed sensor fails the Wintest diagnostic or the stationary multimeter resistance test, it must be replaced.

  4. Clear Codes

    After replacing the sensor or repairing the wiring, use the diagnostic tool to clear the 06.03.49 fault code and run the PTO under a normal load to verify the repair.
