Massey Ferguson 06.03.E3 – TRANS1: Issue With Rear PTO On/Off Solenoid Power Supply

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical anomaly—such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to +12V—in the power supply circuit that activates the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 controller to the rear PTO solenoid valve on the rear axle housing for chafed wires, pinched lines, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the PTO solenoid connector and use a multimeter to check the power supply wire for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to +12V.

  3. Measure the internal resistance of the PTO solenoid coil to verify if it reads out of limits (open circuit) or shows zero resistance (internal short).

  4. Check the pins on both the solenoid and the harness connector for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

    Ensure the tractor is safely parked and powered down before beginning work.

  2. Clean the area around the rear PTO solenoid control valve.

    The valve is located on the rear transmission/axle housing. Cleaning prevents dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

    Carefully unplug the connector from the PTO solenoid valve.

  4. Unbolt the retaining hardware securing the PTO solenoid valve to the housing.

    Remove the bolts holding the valve in place.

  5. Remove the old solenoid valve.

    Be prepared with a catch pan, as a small amount of transmission/hydraulic fluid may leak.

  6. Lubricate the O-rings/seals on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid.

    Proper lubrication ensures a good seal and prevents damage during installation.

  7. Install the new solenoid valve and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

    Secure the new valve to the housing.

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness.

    Plug the connector back into the new solenoid valve.

  9. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes, and test the rear PTO engagement.

    Use the diagnostic menu or service tool to clear codes, then verify the repair by testing the PTO.
