Massey Ferguson 06.1.06 – HITCH: Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit (Hitch)

This code is triggered by the onboard diagnostic system when it detects an electrical irregularity, such as an open circuit, short circuit, or abnormal resistance, in the circuit that controls the Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement solenoid. If this circuit fails, the PTO may fail to engage, drop out during operation, or spin intermittently.

   Check the PTO Switch & Indicator: Verify if the PTO indicator light comes on when the yellow PTO switch is pulled rearward and lifted. If the light does not illuminate, the issue could be the switch itself or a lack of communication to the module.

   Test the Solenoid Coil Resistance: Locate the PTO solenoid valve block (typically mounted externally on top of the rear frame transmission housing). Use a multimeter to check the coil's resistance. A healthy coil should read between 7 and 9 ohms (depending on temperature). An open circuit (infinite resistance) means the coil has burned out.

   Check for Voltage/Magnetism: Turn the key on and engage the PTO switch (safely, with the engine off if possible). Apply a wrench or screwdriver to the end of the solenoid coil to see if it becomes a magnet, which confirms the module is sending 12 volts to the coil.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the PTO solenoid back to the HITCH module. Look for chafed wires, shorts to ground, or disconnected plugs.

   Check Hydraulic Fluid: Ensure the hydraulic fluid is clean and at the proper level. Dirty fluid can cause the solenoid valve spool to stick due to contamination.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, relieve all hydraulic system pressure, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Valve

   Find the PTO valve mounted externally on top of the rear frame transmission housing where the hydraulic lines connect to the PTO clutch system.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the PTO solenoid. Unbolt and remove the faulty solenoid valve assembly from the transmission housing.

   Clean the Area

   Wipe down the mounting surface to ensure no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic system.

   Installation

   Install the new PTO hydraulic solenoid valve, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new coil. Reconnect the battery.

   Testing

   Start the tractor, check for hydraulic leaks around the new valve, and test the PTO switch to ensure the PTO engages and disengages smoothly.
