06.1.08

Massey Ferguson 06.1.08 – HITCH: The Engine RPM Has Dropped Too Much When The PTO Was Engauged.

Issue description

This is an anti-stall protection code. It indicates that when the Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch was commanded to engage, the engine speed dropped below a safe threshold. This typically happens when the PTO engagement is too abrupt (slamming the clutch shut instead of slipping it smoothly), the implement is jammed, or the engine is lacking the power to handle the sudden load.

Applies to these machines

  • 4707
  • 4708
  • 4709
  • 4710
  • T4 (2015-2021)
  • 4710 T4
  • 5710SL
  • 5711SL
  • 5712SL
  • 5713SL T4

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the implement from the PTO shaft and try engaging the PTO bare to rule out a seized implement or one that is too heavy for the current engine RPM.

  2. Check engine health, including fuel filters and air filters, to ensure the engine is not starving for fuel under load.

  3. Check the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and condition, as dirty or low fluid can cause the PTO solenoid to stick or fail.

  4. Inspect the PTO solenoid valve to see if it is failing to modulate pressure, which causes a harsh engagement that stalls the engine.

  5. Check the inductive PTO speed sensor on the PTO shaft for erratic RPM data that could cause the controller to miscalculate engagement timing.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Tractor

Park on a level surface, relieve all hydraulic system pressure, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Replace the PTO Solenoid Valve

Locate the PTO solenoid valve on the transmission housing where the hydraulic lines connect to the PTO clutch system. Disconnect the electrical harness, unbolt the valve body, and install the replacement valve. Ensure the O-rings/seals are seated properly.

  3. Replace the PTO Speed Sensor

Locate the inductive speed sensor near the rear PTO shaft. Disconnect the wiring harness, unthread the old sensor, and thread in the new one.

  4. Fluid Check

Top off any hydraulic fluid lost during the replacement of the valve or sensor.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 06.1.08 fault code from the HITCH module. Test the PTO engagement.
