Massey Ferguson 06.1.4D – HITCH: Issue With PTO Stub Shaft 540/1000 (HITCH)
Issue description
Triggers when the controller receives an implausible, missing, or conflicting signal from the PTO stub shaft sensor. For example, the sensor might fail to detect the shaft, or the physical shaft detected does not match the PTO speed selected by the operator in the cab. For safety, the system will typically disable the PTO to prevent over-speeding implements.

Check the cause
Verify Shaft Installation: Ensure the PTO stub shaft is fully seated in the housing and the retaining circlip is securely in place. A loose shaft will fail to engage the internal detection switch.
Check Cab Selection: Verify that the PTO speed selected on the in-cab switch matches the physical stub shaft installed (e.g., 6-spline 540 RPM vs. 21-spline 1000 RPM).
Inspect Wiring & Connector: Locate the PTO stub shaft sensor on the rear PTO housing. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for mud/debris ingress, corrosion, or broken wires.
Test the Sensor: Use a multimeter to test the sensor for continuity or proper resistance/voltage output when the shaft is inserted versus when it is removed.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Remove the Stub Shaft
Remove the heavy-duty circlip holding the PTO stub shaft in place and slide the shaft out of the housing.
Access the Sensor
Locate the stub shaft detection sensor/switch inside or directly adjacent to the PTO housing cavity.
Disconnect & Remove
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the faulty sensor out of the housing.
Install New Sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor (if applicable) and seat it into the housing. Secure the retaining bolt(s) and reconnect the wiring harness.
Reassemble
Reinsert the correct PTO stub shaft, ensuring it pushes fully against the new sensor, and reinstall the retaining circlip.
Clear Codes & Test
Clear the DTC using a diagnostic tool (or cycle the battery power). Start the tractor, select the corresponding PTO speed, and test the electro-hydraulic PTO engagement to ensure the code does not return.
