Issue description

This code indicates a fault or mismatch regarding the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) stub shaft. Modern Massey Ferguson tractors use an inductive speed/position sensor to monitor the PTO shaft's exact RPM and detect which reversible/swappable stub shaft (540 RPM 6-spline or 1000 RPM 21-spline) is installed. The code triggers when the sensor reads an implausible value, when the physical shaft installed does not match the speed selected by the operator in the cab, or when the sensor/circuit itself fails.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Shaft and Cab Selection: Ensure the physical PTO stub shaft installed (540 or 1000 RPM) matches the speed selected on the PTO switch in the cab.

  2. Inspect the Sensor: Locate the PTO speed inductive sensor on the external rear frame transmission housing. Check for heavy dust, moisture, or debris contamination, which can disrupt the inductive reading.

  3. Check the Wiring Harness: Inspect the sensor wiring for rub points, open circuits, or shorts to ground.

  4. Test Voltage: Verify the sensor supply voltage and ground integrity. A low voltage during operation or a missing signal will trigger this code.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Access the PTO speed inductive sensor near the PTO stub shaft housing. Note that access can be tight.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector. Remove the retaining hardware and pull the old sensor out of the housing. (Installation typically takes 30-45 minutes).

  4. Inspect the Stub Shaft (If necessary)

    If the stub shaft itself is damaged, remove the circlip (snap ring) or the four 1/2" bolts holding the PTO stub shaft to the differential housing. Pull the shaft out. The shaft is fitted inside a tube, so oil loss should be negligible.

  5. Install New Components

    Insert the new sensor (or replacement stub shaft) and secure the hardware.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool or interface device to clear the 06.2.4D DTC from the HITCH module.
