Massey Ferguson 06.2.4E – HITCH: Issue With PTO Stub Shaft 1000 (HITCH)

Triggered when the onboard diagnostic system detects an irregularity, malfunction, or speed mismatch specifically related to the 1000 RPM PTO stub shaft circuit or its physical engagement.

   Check PTO operation to observe if it is creeping or driving when disengaged, which may indicate deeper PTO brake, clutch, or hydraulic pressure issues.

   Inspect rear axle and transmission oil level and condition via the sight glass for low oil, milky oil (water contamination), a burnt smell, or metal particles.

   Inspect transmission and hydraulic filters and strainers for blockages that can cause engagement irregularities.

   Inspect the PTO stub shaft, gearbox input spline, and mounting fasteners for physical wear, burrs, damage, or loose studs that can cause alignment issues and trigger speed sensor faults.

   Preparation

   Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and the electronic park lock is engaged.

   Remove Guards

   Remove the protective cap and guards fitted over the drive shaft and PTO stub shaft.

   Disconnect Implement

   Release the tractor-side yoke from the PTO stub shaft. Support the shaft as you remove it to prevent it from falling and damaging the guards.

   Remove the Stub Shaft

   Remove the retaining fasteners (typically M10 x 20 Torx/12-point studs) holding the bolt-on PTO stub shaft to the housing.

   Clean and Inspect

   Set the old shaft aside. Inspect the gearbox input spline and mating surfaces for burrs, distortion, or damage. Clean the splines and threads in the housing with a wire brush, removing any old threadlock.

   Install the New Shaft

   Apply a light coat of anti-seize grease to the splines. Install the new 1000 RPM PTO stub shaft.

   Secure Fasteners

   Install new PTO shaft studs. Tighten them evenly in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure the mounting plate sits flush, then torque to the manufacturer's specification.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the protective PTO guards and test the PTO engagement via the cab switch to ensure the fault code clears and the shaft operates without vibration.
