Massey Ferguson 06.X.04 – HITCH or TRANS1: Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit (Hitch)
Issue description
This code indicates an electrical fault—such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power—in the circuit that supplies power to the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement solenoid. When this code is active, the PTO may hesitate, fail to engage, or stay engaged when commanded off.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the PTO solenoid connector at the transmission block for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO solenoid for rub points, breaks, or melted insulation (checking for an open circuit or short to ground)
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the PTO solenoid coil pins to verify if the coil is dead (open or shorted internally)
Verify that the solenoid is receiving a solid 12V signal from the TRANS1/HITCH controller when the PTO switch is engaged in the cab, and ensure the ground integrity is intact
Repair steps
Locate the Valve
Identify the Transmission PTO Hydraulic Solenoid Valve on the side of the transmission/hydraulic control block.
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting.
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/bolt at the end of the valve stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off, or unthread the entire electrovalve assembly from the hydraulic block (have a catch pan ready for minor hydraulic fluid loss).
Install the New Part
Thread the new solenoid valve into the block (torque to OEM spec) or slide the new coil onto the existing cartridge.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Use the tractor's onboard display or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored 06.X.04 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and engage the PTO switch to ensure the PTO clutch engages smoothly without throwing the code.
