Massey Ferguson 06.X.49 – TRANS2: There Is A Speed Reading from The PTO Speed Sensor That Does Not Match The Speed Selected Switch Dyna 6 (TRANS2).

The transmission controller is detecting a discrepancy between the physical speed reading coming from the PTO speed sensor and the expected speed based on the position of the PTO speed selector switch. This comparison is primarily used to detect PTO clutch slip, but the code will also trigger if the sensor itself is failing, reading inconsistently, or if there is a wiring issue.

   Perform a Wintest diagnostic check: Connect the tractor to the Wintest software and check live values of the PTO speed sensor while activated. If values match engine speed, the issue is likely actual PTO clutch slip or a mechanical gear issue rather than the sensor.

   Test the sensor with a multimeter: A healthy PTO speed sensor should read a resistance of 2700 to 3300 ohms when stationary. If outside this range, replace it.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the PTO speed sensor (located on the rear axle housing) for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

   Check O-ring clearance: The factory O-ring may hold the sensor out too far, causing inconsistent readings. Try removing the O-ring and sealing the threads with thread tape to allow it to seat slightly deeper before replacing a borderline sensor.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear axle housing near the PTO output shaft.

   Clean area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the housing.

   Disconnect connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove hardware

   Remove the retaining nut/screw holding the sensor in place.

   Remove sensor

   Pull the old sensor out of the housing.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new PTO speed sensor. Ensure the sealing O-ring is in place (or use thread tape if applying the bulletin workaround).

   Secure and reconnect

   Tighten the retaining nut/screw and reconnect the electrical connector.

   Calibrate

   Calibration: Anytime a PTO speed sensor is replaced, you must use the diagnostic tool (Wintest) to sync and configure the PTO and engine speeds.

   Clear the 06.X.49 fault code and test-run the PTO to verify the repair.
