Massey Ferguson 06.X.4A – TRANS2: There Is A Speed Reading from The PTO Speed Sensor That Does Not Match The Speed Selected Switch Dyna 6 (TRANS2)

The transmission controller is detecting a mismatch between the physical rotational speed of the Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft—as read by the inductive PTO speed sensor—and the expected speed based on the position of the operator's PTO speed selector switch.

   Measure the PTO speed sensor resistance at room temperature (0 kph) — a healthy sensor should read 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms.

   Inspect the sensor's electrical connector pins for physical damage or corrosion.

   Check the wiring harness back to the TRANS2 controller for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or splice issues.

   Verify the physical adjustment and clearance of the PTO speed sensor to ensure improper depth is not causing erratic readings.

   Test the PTO speed selector switch to ensure it is sending the correct signal to the controller and not a default or incorrect range signal.

   Preparation

   Position the tractor on flat ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear transmission/PTO housing.

   Disconnect and Test

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Perform the 450 Ohm (+/- 20 Ohm) resistance check using a multimeter.

   Inspect Harness

   While disconnected, inspect the harness side for 12V power, ground, and continuity back to the TRANS2 module.

   Remove Sensor

   If the sensor fails the resistance test or is physically damaged, unscrew it from the housing.

   Install New Sensor

   Thread the new PTO speed sensor into the housing. Ensure it is adjusted to the correct depth/clearance as specified in the service manual to prevent the sensor tip from being damaged by internal rotating components.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key on and clear the fault codes using a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool or via the tractor's diagnostic screen.

   Test Operation

   Warm up the transmission oil (ideal testing temp is between 35°C and 45°C). Engage the PTO in different speed selections to verify that the speed reading matches the selected switch position without triggering the 06.X.4A code.
