Massey Ferguson 06.X.4C – HITCH: Issue With PTO Over Speed Compared To Engine Speed. (HITCH)

This fault code indicates that the PTO speed sensor is registering a rotational speed that is mathematically higher than what is physically possible based on the current engine RPM and the engaged PTO gear ratio. This discrepancy usually points to a faulty PTO speed sensor, damaged wiring, a damaged internal tone wheel, or an issue with the PTO clutch/brake slipping.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO speed sensor for chafed wires, corrosion in the connector, or loose pins that could cause erratic speed signals

   Clear the fault code using a compatible diagnostic tool to see if it is an active fault or a stored intermittent error

   Remove the PTO speed sensor and inspect the internal tone wheel through the sensor port for missing teeth, metal debris, or heavy sludge

   Ensure the PTO brake is functioning and the PTO clutch is not slipping under load, which can cause speed mismatches

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and ensure the PTO switch is in the "PTO Brake" (off) position.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed inductive sensor, which is mounted on the top/rear of the transmission housing above the PTO output shaft.

   Remove the Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt or unthread the sensor from the housing.

   Clean and Inspect

   Clean the mounting port. If the tone wheel is damaged, the tractor will require a rear-end teardown to replace the gear. If the tone wheel is intact, proceed to replace the sensor.

   Install New Sensor

   Thread the new OEM PTO speed sensor into the housing. If it is an adjustable depth sensor, follow the service manual specifications for the correct air gap.

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Start the tractor, engage the PTO at a low RPM, and use a diagnostic tool or the dash display to verify that the PTO speed reading matches the engine RPM ratio without spiking.
