Massey Ferguson 06.X.50 – TRANS1: Issue With Values Received From Rear PTO Speed Sensors Dyna VT (TRANS1)

The transmission controller is receiving erratic, missing, or out-of-range electrical signals from the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) speed sensor. This 40mm magnetic sensor reads the teeth of a tone wheel to monitor PTO shaft RPMs. When the signal fails, the tractor's computer cannot accurately monitor PTO speed, which may cause the ECU to disable PTO operation or automated features to protect the equipment.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the PTO speed sensor for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Remove and clean the magnetic sensor, checking for a buildup of metallic shavings, thick oil mist, or debris on the sensor tip or the internal tone wheel.

   Test the 2-wire sensor's resistance with a multimeter and check for voltage drops or shorts to ground in the harness leading back to the TRANS1 controller.

   Use Massey Ferguson's Wintest software or a compatible diagnostic tool to monitor the live PTO speed sensor output while the tractor is running to check for intermittent signal drops.

   Locate the Sensor

   The rear PTO speed sensor is threaded into the transmission housing near the rear PTO shaft output.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.

   Remove

   Unthread the faulty sensor from its mounting port.

   Clean and Prep

   Thoroughly clean the mounting port and inspect the internal tone wheel for damage or excessive debris.

   Install

   Thread the new 40mm magnetic sensor into the mount.

   Set Air Gap

   Ensure the proper air gap spacing is maintained between the sensor tip and the tone wheel, as incorrect spacing will result in erratic readings.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back in and ensure the weather seal is seated properly.

   Verify

   Clear the 06.X.50 fault code. Engage the PTO and cycle it through different speeds (e.g., 540 / 1000 RPM) to verify that the dash display shows steady, accurate RPM readings without throwing the code again.
