Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the rear PTO speed sensor for breaks, chafing, or corrosion.

  2. Check the tone wheel for heavy buildup of dust, debris, or damage, and clean it thoroughly.

  3. Verify the sensor air gap to ensure the sensor has not backed out or shifted from its precise distance to the tone wheel.

  4. Test RPM output by cycling the PTO at different speeds to check for intermittent dropouts on the display.

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

Locate the rear PTO speed sensor, which is threaded into a mount near the rear PTO shaft.

  2. Disconnect sensor

Disconnect the sensor from the tractor's wiring harness.

  3. Remove old sensor

Unthread the old sensor from the existing mount.

  4. Clean mounting area

Thoroughly clean the mounting area and the internal tone wheel to ensure no debris interferes with the new sensor.

  5. Install new sensor

Thread the new 40mm magnetic speed sensor into the mount. Ensure it is seated to the correct depth to maintain the proper air gap relative to the tone wheel.

  6. Reconnect wiring

Reconnect the tractor's wiring harness to the new sensor.

  7. Verify repair

Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and cycle it at different speeds to verify that the display now shows steady, accurate RPM readings and the fault code clears.
