Massey Ferguson 08.00.28 – HITCH: Issue With Signal From Hitch Draft Control Dial (HITCH)

Issue description

The ELC module is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing voltage signal from the rotary dial used by the operator to set the draft control sensitivity.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the ELC control panel for physical damage, moisture ingress, or heavy dust accumulation around the draft control dial

  2. Disconnect the harness from the back of the draft control potentiometer and check connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-back terminals

  3. Verify the 5V reference and ground supply to the potentiometer from the HITCH module using a multimeter

  4. Perform a signal sweep test by measuring the signal wire voltage while slowly turning the draft control dial from minimum to maximum (should sweep smoothly between 0.5V and 4.5V)

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Console

Carefully pry up or unscrew the trim panel surrounding the ELC control console on the right-hand armrest/fender.

  3. Remove the Dial

Pull the plastic knob off the draft control dial. Remove the retaining nut holding the potentiometer to the console panel.

  4. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the faulty potentiometer.

  5. Install New Part

Insert the new potentiometer through the console, secure it with the retaining nut, and press the knob back onto the splined shaft.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reinstall the console trim.

  7. Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use a compatible diagnostic tool (like the Massey Ferguson EDT) to clear the 08.00.28 fault code. Note: A Rear Hitch Module Calibration may be required after replacing ELC input components.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Hitch Draft Control Dial / Potentiometer (Generic)

If sold separately, this is a standard 3-wire rotary potentiometer.

  • ELC Control Console Assembly

    3784084M93

On many modern series (like the 5400/5600), the dials are integrated into a single sealed electronic panel.

  • Draft Control Knob (Plastic)

    1860403M1

If the physical knob is broken. Note: This specific part number is primarily for older mechanical quadrant controls, but serves as a reference for AGCO knob replacements.
