Massey Ferguson 08.01.23 – HITCH module: Rear Hitch Depth Control Dial Signal Voltage Issue

Issue description

The electronic lift control (ELC) system is receiving an invalid signal voltage from the setpoint potentiometer (the dial or lever used by the operator to set the working depth of the rear hitch). The signal is either out of its expected operating range, short-circuited, or has an open circuit. Automatic draft and depth control functions are locked out for safety.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the depth control dial on the right-hand console and the Hitch ECU for chafing, pinched wires, or loose/corroded pins.

  2. Verify that the Hitch ECU is sending the correct reference voltage (typically 5V or 8.5V depending on the Bosch EHR generation) and a solid ground to the potentiometer connector.

  3. Disconnect the potentiometer and measure the resistance across its terminals while slowly turning the depth control dial. The resistance should vary smoothly without sudden dropouts, spikes, or an open circuit reading.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Console

Remove the retaining screws and carefully lift the cover of the right-hand ELC control console or multifunction armrest to expose the rear hitch control electronics.

  3. Remove the Faulty Dial

Disconnect the electrical harness from the depth control potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the dial assembly in place and extract the faulty potentiometer.

  4. Install the New Part

Fit the replacement potentiometer or complete control knob assembly into the console. Secure the mount and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Reassemble

Reinstall the console cover and reconnect the battery.

  6. Recalibrate the Linkage

Perform a linkage calibration after replacing the depth setting potentiometer. This teaches the Hitch ECU the new high and low signal limits of the dial to ensure maximum linkage position precision.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the 08.01.23 fault code from the system and test the rear hitch for proper raise, lower, and depth control operation.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Rear Hitch Depth Control Potentiometer

    ACW0505690

Potentiometer only - common on modern series like the 5700. Always verify the specific part number against the tractor's serial number.

  • Lift Console Control Knob Assembly

    ACW022130C

Control Knob Complete Assembly. Part numbers vary heavily by cab configuration and tractor generation. Always verify against the serial number.
