Massey Ferguson 08.02.23 – HITCH Control Module: Rear Hitch Depth Control Dial Signal Voltage Issue (HITCH)

This fault code indicates that the signal voltage coming from the rear hitch depth control dial (a rotary potentiometer) is out of the expected range. The system expects a smooth, continuous voltage sweep (typically between 0.5V and 4.5V) as the dial is turned. When the voltage drops too low, spikes too high, or becomes erratic, the controller registers a signal voltage issue, which often locks out the Electronic Lift Control (ELC) system for safety.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the base of the depth control dial in the armrest/console for pinched wires, loose pins, or debris.

   Verify that the potentiometer is receiving its 5V reference signal and has a solid ground from the HITCH controller using a multimeter.

   Perform a signal sweep test by back-probing the signal wire and slowly turning the depth control dial from minimum to maximum. The voltage should sweep smoothly (e.g., 0.5V to 4.5V). If it drops to 0V, spikes to 5V, or jumps erratically, the potentiometer has an internal failure.

   Check for continuity on the signal wire between the dial connector and the HITCH module to rule out an open or shorted harness if the potentiometer tests fine.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Console

   Remove the retaining screws for the side console or armrest cover where the ELC (Electronic Lift Control) panel is housed.

   Remove the Dial

   Carefully lift the panel. Pull the plastic knob off the top of the depth control dial.

   Disconnect and Extract

   Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the underside of the panel.

   Install the New Part

   Insert the new potentiometer, secure it with the retaining hardware, and press the control knob back onto the splined/D-shaped shaft.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the electrical harness, seat the panel back into the armrest, and reinstall the console screws.

   Reactivate/Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on. Clear the inactive 08.02.23 fault code. Reactivate the ELC system (often by cycling the hitch up/down switch past the neutral position) or calibrate via a dealer diagnostic tool.
