Massey Ferguson 08.02.61 – HITCH: Rear Linkage Lower Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The control unit has detected that the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the circuit for the rear hitch's lowering solenoid is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold, typically pointing to a short circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Wiring Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the Hitch module to the rear linkage lower solenoid. Look for rub points, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could be causing a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the lower solenoid. Inspect the connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or signs of melting/arcing.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance (ohms) across the pins of the lower solenoid coil. If the resistance is at or near zero, the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Ground Integrity: Verify that the ground connections for the hitch valve block and module are clean and tight.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the rear linkage hydraulic valve block (usually at the rear of the tractor near the hitch assembly) and identify the "Lower" electrovalve solenoid.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the lower solenoid.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a chafed wire shorting to the chassis, repair the wire using proper solder and heat-shrink tubing, then re-loom the harness.

  5. Replace the Solenoid (If Shorted)

    If the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off (or unscrew the entire electrovalve cartridge, depending on the specific valve block iteration).

  6. Install New Part

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes & Test

    Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 08.02.61 code from the HITCH module. Start the tractor and test the rear linkage raise/lower functions to ensure the high amp draw condition has been resolved.
