Massey Ferguson 08.03.22 – HITCH: Rear Hitch Position Sensor Signal Voltage Issue (HITCH)
Issue description
This code indicates that the control unit is receiving an implausible, missing, or out-of-range voltage signal (often too low, such as under 0.25V, or too high) from the rear hitch position sensor. This sensor monitors the physical height/angle of the rear three-point linkage. When this signal fails, the tractor's computer will typically disable the electronic hitch control (EHR) for safety, rendering the rear hitch inoperable or unresponsive to cab controls.

Check the cause
Visual Wiring Inspection: Check the wiring harness running from the HITCH controller to the rear hitch position sensor. Look for rubbed, pinched, or broken wires that could cause an open circuit or a short to ground.
Connector Check: Inspect the sensor connector at the rear axle/rockshaft for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins.
Voltage Test: Use a multimeter to check the sensor feedback voltage. A reading that is completely dead (0V) or extremely low (e.g., <0.25V) usually confirms a short to a low source or a failed sensor potentiometer.
Mechanical Linkage Check: Ensure the sensor's physical linkage to the rockshaft hasn't disconnected, bent, or jammed, which can force the sensor outside its normal voltage operating range.
Recapture Test: Sometimes the system simply loses its position reference. Try cycling the hitch position lever fully to see if the controller can recapture the hitch position (the enable light may flash during this process).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits while working on the EHR system.
Remove the Old Sensor
Locate the rear hitch position sensor on the rear rockshaft assembly. Disconnect the electrical harness and unbolt the sensor bracket/housing.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the replacement sensor. If installing a GPA20 style assembly, ensure a gap of approximately 20mm (0.79 in) is left between the sensor body and the locknut. If it is an HA assembly, ensure the mark on the rotating shaft is positioned on the same side as the connector before tightening.
Reconnect Wiring
Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring the weather seal is intact.
Perform Linkage Calibration
Crucial step. You cannot simply plug and play; calibration is the only way to obtain precise linkage positioning. Enter the tractor's diagnostic/calibration menu (procedure varies slightly by series, often requiring a specific sequence of the hitch controls and dashboard buttons) to calibrate the upper and lower limits of the new sensor.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 08.03.22 fault code from the HITCH module. Cycle the hitch position lever to recapture the position and verify full range of motion without the error returning.
