Massey Ferguson 08.03.62 – HITCH: Rear Linkage Raise Solenoid High Amp Draw (HITCH)
Issue description
The electrical circuit controlling the solenoid responsible for raising the rear 3-point hitch is pulling more electrical current (amperage) than the system expects. This is typically caused by a short circuit within the solenoid coil itself, a short-to-ground in the wiring harness, or a failing solenoid that is mechanically binding.

Check the cause
Check battery and system voltage to ensure the alternator is providing proper voltage, as low system voltage can cause solenoids to draw excess amperage to compensate.
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the rear hitch raise solenoid back to the HITCH module for rub points, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could be shorting directly to the tractor chassis (ground).
Disconnect the plug at the raise solenoid and inspect the connector for water ingress, corrosion, or melted pins which can bridge the circuit.
Perform a coil resistance test using a digital multimeter across the two pins of the raise solenoid coil. A reading of near 0 Ohms indicates a dead short inside the coil, confirming the solenoid is the culprit.
Perform a harness short test: with the solenoid unplugged, turn the key ON and command a raise function. If the code changes to an Open Circuit code (like 08.03.60), the wiring is likely fine and the solenoid is at fault. If the High Amp Draw code persists while unplugged, the wiring harness has a short to ground.
Repair steps
Safety First
Lower the rear linkage completely to the ground to relieve all hydraulic pressure from the lift cylinders. Turn off the tractor and remove the key.
Locate the Valve
Locate the rear hitch hydraulic control valve block (usually located at the rear of the tractor, under the cab/fender area). Identify the specific 'Raise' solenoid (refer to the service manual diagram to distinguish it from the 'Lower' solenoid).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty raise solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid Coil
Remove the retaining nut on the end of the valve stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: If the cartridge itself is leaking or damaged, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge valve from the block. Have a catch pan ready for hydraulic fluid).
Install the New Part
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to the specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can distort the valve).
Reconnect and Clear
Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on and use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 08.03.62 fault code from the HITCH module.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and operate the rear linkage raise/lower switches to confirm smooth operation and ensure the code does not return.
