Massey Ferguson 08.X.27 – Rear Hitch Module (HITCH): Issue With Signal From Hitch Maximum Height Dial (HITCH)
Issue description
The operator uses a rotary dial (a potentiometer) on the side console to set the maximum height limit for the rear 3-point hitch. This code triggers when the control module detects that the voltage signal coming from this dial is erratic, out of range (shorted/open), or missing entirely. When this happens, the tractor may restrict hitch movement or disable the lift function to prevent damage.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the hitch dials for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or loose pins.
Perform a voltage and ground test at the dial potentiometer to verify it is receiving a 5V reference and has a solid ground.
Conduct a sweep test by measuring the signal wire voltage while slowly turning the dial from minimum to maximum; look for dropouts, spikes, or constant 0V/5V.
Check for other active fault codes that might indicate a loss of communication between the side console and the HITCH module.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Console
Carefully remove the trim panels or retaining screws on the right-hand side control armrest/console to expose the underside of the hitch control dials.
Remove the Faulty Dial
Unplug the electrical connector from the Hitch Maximum Height potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting clips holding the dial in the console housing and pull the sensor out.
Install the New Part
Insert the replacement potentiometer into the console, ensuring the alignment tab sits correctly in the slot. Secure it with the retaining nut.
Reassembly
Plug the electrical connector back in and reassemble the side console trim.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Turn the tractor ON. Most electronic hitch systems require a brief initialization cycle after a potentiometer replacement so the HITCH module can learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage range. (Refer to the specific model's operator manual for the EHR calibration sequence).
Clear Codes
Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 08.X.27 fault code. Test the 3-point hitch to ensure the maximum height limit functions correctly.
