Massey Ferguson 08.X.61 – HITCH: Rear Linkage Lower Solenoid High Amp Draw (HITCH) / Short Circuit

Issue description

The controller has detected an excessive electrical current draw on the circuit responsible for the solenoid that lowers the rear linkage. This condition is typically caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself, or a short-to-ground in the wiring harness connecting the module to the solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the HITCH module to the rear linkage lower solenoid for rub points, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the solenoid connector and check for corrosion, water ingress, or damaged pins.

  3. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the rear linkage lower solenoid coil. A reading near zero ohms indicates the coil is internally shorted.

  4. Verify that the ground connections for the hitch module and the solenoid circuit are clean and secure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage during testing.

  2. Isolate the Fault

    Disconnect the wiring harness at the rear linkage lower solenoid.

  3. Test the Harness

    Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Use a multimeter to check if the power supply wire in the harness is shorted to ground. If a short is found in the wiring, trace the harness back to the HITCH module and repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the harness tests fine but the solenoid coil failed the resistance test (indicating an internal short), remove the retaining nut/clip holding the solenoid coil to the hydraulic valve stem. Slide the old solenoid off and install the new OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the wiring harness to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 08.X.61 DTC from the HITCH module.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the tractor and operate the rear linkage raise/lower controls to confirm the repair and ensure the code does not return.
