Massey Ferguson 0A.13.28 – Hydraulic Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 1 Issue

Issue description

A malfunction in the first external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve) circuit, typically caused by an electrical connection problem to the hydraulic valve, a failure of the spool valve position sensor, or a communication error regarding the spool position sensor value.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connectors leading to External Hydraulic Valve 1 (located on the rear remote stack or mid-mount block) for corrosion, bent pins, or wire chafing.

  2. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to read the live data from the spool position sensor. Check if the sensor value changes smoothly when the valve is commanded to move.

  3. Verify that there is active CAN communication between the Dash and the Valve Module.

  4. Ensure the spool valve is not physically binding due to debris or internal hydraulic failure.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the tractor, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Identify External Hydraulic Valve 1 in the remote valve stack.

  3. Clean and Re-seat Connectors

    Disconnect the electrical harness to the valve's solenoid and position sensor. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and re-seat the connector. Clear the code to see if it returns.

  4. Replace the Sensor/Switch

    If the code persists and live data shows erratic spool position values, remove the electric spool valve control switch/sensor assembly from the valve body.

  5. Install New Components

    Install the replacement sensor or solenoid. If the valve body itself is internally damaged or scored, the entire spool valve section may need to be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery, top off any lost hydraulic fluid, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.13.28 DTC. Run a hydraulic valve calibration procedure if required by the specific model's service manual.
