Check the cause

  1. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to confirm the 0A.1X.18 code and check for related spool position sensor codes.

  2. Check the electrical connections and wiring harness leading to External Hydraulic Valve 1 for corrosion, damage, or loose pins (the system frequently flags connection problems).

  3. Inspect the hydraulic valve block for external leaks, ensure proper UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) fluid levels, and check that the hydraulic filter is not clogged.

  4. Verify if the spool is returning to the 'Neutral' position. If oil is leaking around the spool internally, it may indicate a damaged spool bore, a failed centering spring, or foreign matter contamination.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system and ensure the control handles are positioned in 'Neutral'.

  2. Disconnection

Disconnect the electrical connectors to the spool position sensor and remove the spool valve cable.

  3. Disassembly

Remove the snap ring and the valve spool end cap.

  4. Inspection & Cleaning

Carefully remove the spool plug assembly. Inspect the spool and the bore for scoring or damage. Clean the valve body to ensure no contamination is restricting the centering springs or return ports.

  5. Component Replacement

If the centering spring is damaged, replace it. If the spool or valve body is scored and cannot hold pressure, the entire valve assembly must be replaced.

  6. Reassembly

Reassemble the valve using loctite primer and Loctite 242 on threaded handle parts if applicable. Torque the relief valve body hex nut to 20-25 ft-lbs.

  7. Testing

Reconnect the hydraulic hoses and spool valve cable. Refill the hydraulic fluid, bleed the system, and test the valve operation to ensure the fault code clears and there are no leaks.
