Massey Ferguson 0A.20.18 – Mid Mount Valve Module or Hydraulic/Transmission Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction in the circuit or mechanical operation of the second rear remote hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition is typically a connection problem on the hydraulic valve, a spool position sensor value that is out of range, or a physical sticking/jamming of the spool valve that prevents it from moving to the commanded position.

Check the cause
Check Fluid and Filters: Inspect the hydraulic oil for contamination (dirt/debris) and check the hydraulic/transmission filters. Dirty oil or blocked filters restrict flow and cause valve issues.
Electrical Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector going to External Hydraulic Valve 2. Look for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged wires, as connection problems are a primary trigger for this code.
Spool Position Sensor: Use a compatible diagnostic tool to read the live values of the spool position sensor. If the sensor is reading out of bounds or not changing when the valve is commanded, the sensor or its wiring is faulty.
Mechanical Binding: Check if the valve is physically sticking or jamming due to internal wear or debris. Symptoms include unresponsive hydraulic controls or a valve that sticks in one direction.
Couplers and Hoses: Ensure the rear remote couplers are not blocked or damaged, which can cause pressure-related faults.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic levers to relieve all pressure from the hydraulic system before beginning work.
Electrical Repair
If the diagnostic check revealed a wiring issue, clean the connector contacts with electrical contact cleaner. Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness leading to Valve 2.
Valve Spool Removal
If sticking/leaking: Remove the linkage or electronic actuator lever from the front of the spool. Clean the exterior of the valve body thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the system. Unscrew the rear plug/pipe from the valve body. Carefully withdraw the spool, taking note of any detent balls, springs, or cups.
Clean and Reseal
Inspect the spool and the inside of the valve body for scoring. If it is in good condition, replace the O-rings and seals. Clean the spool with a lint-free cloth and hydraulic fluid.
Sensor Replacement
If the spool position sensor failed the diagnostic test, unbolt the sensor from the valve assembly and install a new OEM sensor.
Reassembly
Lubricate the spool with clean hydraulic oil and carefully slide it back into the valve body. Reinstall the detent springs/balls and tighten the rear plug. Reconnect the actuator linkage and electrical connections.
Filter Change
Replace the remote valve filter / hydraulic transmission filter and top up the hydraulic fluid to the correct level on the dipstick.
Clear Codes
Use a Massey Ferguson-compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.20.18 code and test the remote valve with an implement to ensure proper flow and pressure.
