0A.22.28

Massey Ferguson 0A.22.28 – Hydraulic Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the tractor's second external hydraulic remote (spool) valve circuit. The underlying condition is typically caused by restricted oil flow, a pressure problem, or an electrical fault such as an open circuit, short to ground, or a missing/implausible signal from the spool position sensor or valve solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the hydraulic/transmission oil for contamination (dirt or debris) and check the hydraulic oil filter for blockages

  2. Check the external hydraulic couplers for damage, blockages, or worn hoses that could restrict pressure to the implement

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Valve 2 for rub points, check the solenoid connector for corrosion, and test the coil resistance

  4. Verify ground integrity and check for an open circuit or short to ground in the valve circuit

  5. Check the spool position sensor values via live data on a diagnostic tool to see if the readings are implausible or missing

Repair steps

  1. Relieve System Pressure

Ensure the tractor is off and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the remote valves before beginning work.

  2. Service Fluids

If the oil is contaminated or the filter is blocked, drain the hydraulic fluid, replace the hydraulic/transmission filter, and refill with clean, OEM-spec hydraulic fluid.

  3. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit at the Valve 2 solenoid, repair the damaged wiring harness or replace the corroded connector.

  4. Clean/Replace the Spool Valve

If the valve is mechanically sticking, remove the External Hydraulic Valve 2 assembly. Clean the spool valve and replace the O-rings/seals using an OEM repair kit.

  5. Replace the Valve/Slice

If the electric spool slice or solenoid has failed internally (e.g., bad coil resistance or dead position sensor), remove the faulty spool slice and install the replacement unit. Note: Some modern electric spool slices require programming/calibration to the tractor's module after installation.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.22.28 code and test the remote hydraulics under load to ensure proper pressure and flow.
