Massey Ferguson 0A.2X.28 – Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the second rear remote hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition is typically an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or poor connection at the solenoid), a communication failure, or a mechanical issue like a sticking spool valve that prevents the valve from responding to electronic commands.

Check the cause

  1. Check fluid and filters: Verify that the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) is at the correct level and not contaminated. Blocked filters or degraded oil can cause sticky spool valves.

  2. Inspect quick-release couplers: Ensure the hydraulic couplers on Valve 2 are not damaged and that implements are fully seated. A partially seated coupler can deadhead the fluid, causing pressure faults.

  3. Electrical harness inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Valve 2. Look for rub points, broken wires, or corrosion inside the solenoid connector.

  4. Test the solenoid: Use a multimeter to check the coil resistance on the Valve 2 solenoid and verify ground integrity.

  5. Swap test: If possible, swap the electrical connector from Valve 1 to Valve 2 to see if the fault code follows the wiring or stays with the physical valve slice.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the tractor, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve all residual pressure in the system.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the rear remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Address Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, clean the connector pins with contact cleaner, replace damaged pins, or repair the harness. Clear the code and test.

  4. Remove the Spool Slice

    If the valve itself is faulty, disconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors from Valve 2. Unbolt the tie-rods holding the valve stack together and carefully slide out the Valve 2 slice.

  5. Rebuild or Replace

    To rebuild: Disassemble the slice and use an OEM repair kit to replace the internal O-rings, seals, and worn pilot pressure components. To replace: Install a brand-new electric spool slice.

  6. Reassembly

    Slide the new/rebuilt valve back into the stack, torque the tie-rods to factory spec, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.

  7. Calibration

    If a new electric spool slice was installed, connect a dealer diagnostic tool to program and calibrate the new valve to the tractor's CAN bus system.

  8. Test

    Top off the hydraulic fluid, start the tractor, check for leaks, and actuate Valve 2 to ensure smooth operation.
