Issue description

Indicates a malfunction within the circuit or mechanical operation of the third rear external hydraulic remote (spool valve). Check the cause

  1. Verify Controls: Test the operation of the #3 hydraulic remote using both the in-cab joystick/fingertip controls and the external mudguard switches to see if the issue is isolated to a specific input.

  2. Inspect Wiring & Connectors: Check the electrical connector at the #3 external hydraulic valve actuator (located at the rear remote valve stack) for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing or shorts to ground.

  3. Test Solenoid Resistance: Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the solenoid coil on the #3 valve. Compare the reading to the adjacent working valves (e.g., Valve 2 or 4).

  4. Swap Test: Temporarily swap the electrical connector from Valve 3 to Valve 2. If the fault code changes to the Valve 2 circuit, the issue is in the wiring or ECU. If the fault remains on Valve 3, the electronic actuator or the valve itself has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the rear remote valve stack with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Disconnect Harness

    Unplug the electrical connector from the #3 spool valve actuator.

  4. Remove the Valve

    Remove the tie-bolts or retaining bolts that hold the #3 spool valve section to the main valve block.

  5. Separate the Assembly

    Carefully separate the #3 valve from the stack. Be extremely careful not to lose or damage the interconnecting O-rings between the valve slices.

  6. Replace Components

    If diagnostics pointed to a failed actuator, replace the solenoid unit. If the spool is mechanically binding or internally scored, replace the entire #3 valve section.

  7. Reassembly

    Install the new valve or actuator using new O-rings lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid.

  8. Torque

    Re-torque the valve stack retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque to prevent leaks or spool binding.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness, start the tractor, check for leaks, and use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.31.1E DTC. Test the remote for proper operation.
