Massey Ferguson 0A.40.19 – onboard diagnostic system / main ECU: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
This code indicates a malfunction or communication failure with the 4th external hydraulic spool valve (remote valve). It points to connection problems, open circuits, or short circuits on the hydraulic valve solenoids, or a physical sticking/seeping issue within the spool valve itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Hydraulic Valve 4 for chafed wires, loose connections, or corrosion at the connector pins.
Test the solenoid on Valve 4 for an open circuit or short circuit to ground/power (+12V), and verify that the control module is sending the correct voltage when actuated.
Check for internal leaks by placing a ball valve in line ahead of the spool valve. If the implement seeps down with the ball valve closed, the issue may be in the cylinders. If it holds, the spool valve is bypassing internally.
Ensure the spool valve is not physically sticking in one direction due to debris or worn seals.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic controls in the cab to relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system before beginning work.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the external hydraulic valve stack (usually at the rear of the tractor). Identify Valve 4.
Electrical Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector.
Valve Rebuild/Replacement
Disconnect the hydraulic lines attached to Valve 4, capping them to prevent contamination. Remove the mounting bolts securing Valve 4 to the valve stack. If rebuilding: Disassemble the valve on a clean workbench, replace all O-rings, seals, and springs using an OEM spool valve repair kit, and lubricate the new seals with clean hydraulic fluid before reassembly. If replacing: Install the new spool valve assembly.
Reinstallation
Bolt the valve back into the stack, torque to OEM specifications, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.
Test and Clear Codes
Start the tractor, check for leaks, and cycle Valve 4 to ensure proper operation. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.40.19 code from the system.
