Issue description

The onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction on the 4th external hydraulic remote (spool) valve. This is typically an electrical or signal issue, such as an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a signal that is out of range on the valve's solenoid or position sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the LED lights on the electronic valve itself (solid red when receiving power, turn green when receiving input to move, and flash if the valve has an internal fault)

  2. Inspect the solenoid connector on Valve 4 for dirt, corrosion, or moisture, and inspect the wiring harness for rub points or broken wires

  3. Test the solenoid coil resistance and verify ground integrity

  4. Check for mechanical binding to ensure the external linkage is in the center position, as rusted spool valve detents can make it impossible for the valve to center properly

  5. Verify system voltage at the battery and alternator, as low voltage during cranking or weak charging can cause false hydraulic valve codes

  6. Verify that the hydraulic oil level is correct and filters are not blocked

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and relieve hydraulic pressure in the system by cycling the remote levers/buttons.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

    Locate External Hydraulic Valve 4 at the rear remote valve stack.

  3. Address Wiring Issues

    Disconnect the electrical harness to the valve's solenoid. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. If any wires are chafed or broken, repair the harness.

  4. Replace the Solenoid/Valve

    If the wiring is intact but the valve fails resistance testing, or if the mechanical detents are heavily rusted/seized, the spool valve assembly or its electronic solenoid head must be replaced. Unbolt the faulty valve section from the hydraulic block, taking care not to lose any O-rings between the slices.

  5. Install New Components

    Bolt the new valve or solenoid into place, ensuring O-rings are properly seated. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Test and Clear Codes

    Top up the hydraulic fluid if any was lost. Turn the key on and use a compatible diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard dashboard sequence) to clear the DTCs. Test the remote for proper operation.
