Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition; change if dark, smells burnt, or looks milky (water contamination)

  2. Inspect the hydraulic filter for partial blockages restricting flow to the system

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical solenoid connector on External Valve 4 for corrosion, damage, or loose pins

  4. Test the system pressure with a hydraulic gauge to ensure the pump and relief valves are operating correctly and the issue is isolated to Valve 4

  5. Visually inspect the valve block (commonly a Bosch Rexroth SB23 unit) for external leaks, damaged O-rings, or sticking spools

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate External Hydraulic Valve 4 on the rear remote valve stack. On many modern Massey Ferguson models, this is a Bosch Rexroth SB23-EHS electro-hydraulic valve block.

  3. Clean and Re-test

Disconnect the electrical solenoid connector for Valve 4, clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, reconnect, and test to see if the code clears.

  4. Reseal (If Leaking)

If the valve is leaking externally or internally but the electronics are sound, you can attempt to reseal it using a specialized spool valve replacement/reseal kit rather than replacing the entire expensive unit.

  5. Replace the Valve Section

If the valve has failed mechanically or electrically beyond a reseal: Remove the tie-rod mounting bolts securing the manifold stack. Carefully slide the faulty Valve 4 section out, ensuring no dirt enters the hydraulic system. Install the new replacement valve section with new O-rings. Torque the manifold bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  6. Finalize

Reconnect the electrical harness, top up the hydraulic fluid, run the tractor to cycle the remote valve, check for leaks, and clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • External Hydraulic Valve Section (Electro-Hydraulic)

    3797234M6

    Manufactured by Bosch Rexroth, model SB23-EHS / SB23EHS21 / R917006023. Fits 6400, 7400, 7600 series and others.

  • Spool Valve Reseal Kit

    AT20010

K-Line Part. Used to reseal leaking Bosch SB23 remote valves without replacing the whole unit.

  • Hydraulic Fluid

OEM UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil).

  • Hydraulic Filter

Generic replacement required if fluid is contaminated.
