Massey Ferguson 0A.42.22: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
A malfunction or communication failure associated with the 4th rear remote hydraulic spool valve. This is heavily tied to electrical circuit faults, open circuits, or short circuits at the valve's solenoid.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate External Hydraulic Valve 4 on the rear remote stack. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the valve's electronic solenoid for chafing, breaks, or pinch points.
Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical connector at the valve. Check for heavy corrosion, dirt, or moisture inside the terminals, which is a common issue if the tractor is exposed to fertilizer or harsh environments.
Re-mating: Sometimes, simply disconnecting and firmly re-mating the connector will resolve a poor connection issue.
Voltage/Resistance Testing: Test the solenoid's resistance with a multimeter to ensure it is not internally shorted or open. Verify that the harness is delivering the correct voltage from the ECU when the valve is commanded via the cab controls.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure by cycling the hydraulic levers/buttons.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the rear hydraulic valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Address Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed corroded terminals, replace the affected terminal pins or splice in a new connector pigtail.
Replace the Valve/Solenoid (If Faulty)
Disconnect the electrical harness from Valve 4. Unbolt the faulty electronic solenoid or the entire spool valve slice from the hydraulic block (depending on whether the solenoid is serviced separately on your specific model). Install the new valve/solenoid using new O-rings to ensure a proper seal between the valve slices. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the electrical harness. Start the tractor, allow hydraulic pressure to build, and test the operation of Valve 4.
Clear Codes
Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.42.22 code from the system.
