Massey Ferguson 0A.42.23 – Hydraulic Control Module / EHR: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction in the 4th external hydraulic remote (spool valve) circuit. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem (such as an open or short circuit at the solenoid), a failure of the valve spool to return to neutral, or a calibration error within the valve.

Check the cause
Visual Wiring Inspection: Check the wiring harness and electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 4 at the rear remote block. Look for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.
Solenoid Testing: Use a multimeter to check the solenoid valve for an open circuit, short circuit to ground, or short circuit between cables.
Mechanical Check: Verify if the valve spool is physically stuck or failing to return to the neutral position (worn spool valve detents are a known issue).
Calibration Check: Connect a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to see if the valve spool simply requires software recalibration.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the remote levers/buttons.
Clean and Reconnect
Disconnect the electrical harness to External Hydraulic Valve 4. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect. Clear the code with a diagnostic tool to see if the fault returns.
Solenoid Replacement
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails continuity testing, replace the solenoid coil on Valve 4.
Detent Repair (If Applicable)
If the spool is mechanically failing to center, inspect the detents. On models like the 7600 series, you can modify and install a replacement detent kit rather than replacing the entire valve body.
Valve Replacement
If the internal valve body is damaged, scored, or the detent repair is not applicable to your specific model, remove the hydraulic lines and mounting bolts, and replace the complete External Hydraulic Valve 4 assembly.
Recalibration
After replacing the valve, solenoid, or detents, use a Massey Ferguson diagnostic interface to perform a valve spool calibration procedure and clear the 0A.42.23 DTC.
Parts you might need
(4)Complete External Hydraulic Valve Assembly
OEM part numbers are highly specific to the tractor's exact serial number and hydraulic pump configuration.
Spool Valve Detent Kit
Available aftermarket or through OEM channels for the 7600 series as a cost-effective alternative to replacing the entire valve block.
Hydraulic Solenoid Coil / Valve
Hydraulic Quick Couplers
8250-41/2" NPT female body halves, if the couplers are leaking or damaged during removal
