Massey Ferguson 0A.43.1F – Autotronic 5 TECU or Armrest / FingerTIP Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
Indicates a malfunction or connection problem on the 4th electrohydraulic remote/spool valve. It is typically triggered by a fault in the valve position sensor line, a solenoid circuit issue (open circuit or short to ground), or a failure of the valve to return to the neutral position. When this code is active, the tractor's control unit will block/lock out the affected valve for safety, and an audible beep may be heard in the cab.

Check the cause
Clear and Reset: Delete the error code from the control unit dashboard. Stop the engine and restart it. If the code was a transient voltage glitch, the valve will reactivate. If the code returns, the valve will remain blocked and requires physical diagnosis.
Visual & Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Hydraulic Valve 4 at the rear of the tractor. Look for rub points, damaged insulation, or a disconnected solenoid connector.
Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to check the solenoid coil resistance and verify ground integrity. Check for a short to ground or an open circuit on the valve position sensor line.
Mechanical Check: Ensure the external linkage and the valve spool itself are not physically jammed and are resting in the center/neutral position.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the TECU/valve circuits.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the rear hydraulic remote valve block. Identify Spool Valve 4 (usually the 4th slice in the stack).
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector pin at the valve, repair the harness using OEM-approved weatherproof connectors.
Replace the Solenoid/Pilot Valve
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining screws on the pilot pressure control solenoid for Valve 4 and replace it.
Replace the Spool Valve Assembly
If the valve position sensor (which is often integrated into the electrohydraulic valve slice) has failed, the entire spool valve slice must be replaced. Relieve system hydraulic pressure, unbolt the tie-rods holding the valve stack together, remove slice 4, insert the new valve with new O-rings, and torque the stack to OEM specifications.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic interface (or dealer laptop) to perform a FingerTIP / Spool Valve calibration so the Autotronic 5 ECU learns the new valve's neutral, extend, and retract voltage limits.
