0A.43.23

Massey Ferguson 0A.43.23 – SMS (Spool Valve Management System) / AUTOTRONIC / EHRC: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the electrohydraulic auxiliary spool valve (specifically the 4th remote valve slice) at the rear of the tractor. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem to the valve, an internal electronic failure of the valve's pilot pressure control, or an internal hydraulic pressure loss preventing the valve from operating correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Check the 4-pin electrical connector on the 4th external hydraulic valve slice at the rear of the tractor for corrosion, broken wires, or loose pins.

  2. Check for internal hydraulic pressure loss. If implements drop overnight or settle quickly after the engine is turned off, it points to worn seals, damaged O-rings, or a leaking control valve inside the spool slice.

  3. Cross-test the valve by temporarily swapping the electrical connector from Valve 4 to another working valve (e.g., Valve 3). If the fault code changes to the other valve, the wiring or cab joystick is at fault. If the fault remains on the valve slice, the slice itself has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Lower all hydraulic implements to the ground and turn off the tractor to relieve hydraulic pressure.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the faulty External Hydraulic Valve 4.

  3. Removal

If the valve slice is diagnosed as faulty, unbolt the tie-rods holding the rear hydraulic valve stack together. Carefully remove the faulty spool slice (Valve 4) from the manifold block.

  4. Replacement/Rebuild

Install the new or rebuilt electric spool slice. Ensure that all mating surfaces are clean and that new O-rings are installed between the valve slices to prevent internal pressure loss.

  5. Reassembly

Torque the valve stack tie-rods to the manufacturer's specifications and reconnect the 4-pin electrical connector.

  6. Calibration & Clearing

Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.43.23 DTC from the system. The new valve may need to be programmed/calibrated to the tractor's SMS via the Datatronic terminal to set flow rates and kick-out timing.
