Massey Ferguson 0A.4X.29 – Hydraulic Control Module or Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Autotronic / DCC3: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
Indicates an electrical malfunction, communication failure, or position sensor error on the 4th remote spool valve slice. The control unit will typically block/lock out the affected valve for safety.

Check the cause
Cycle the Ignition: Stop the tractor and restart the engine. If the code was a temporary glitch, the valve will unlock. If the code remains, the valve will stay blocked.
Inspect Electrical Connections: Check the wiring harness and connector plugging into the 4th hydraulic spool slice at the rear of the tractor. Look for corrosion, bent pins, or a connection problem.
Check the Valve Position Sensor: Verify the sensor wiring for continuity and shorts to ground.
Check Solenoid Voltage: Verify that the valve is receiving the correct voltage (typically 12V for ON, 0A for OFF) from the control unit.
Repair steps
Safety Preparation
Lower all hydraulic implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and relieve residual hydraulic pressure by moving the remote levers/joysticks.
Access the Valve Stack
Locate the external hydraulic valve block assembly at the rear of the tractor. Identify the 4th spool slice in the stack.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the exterior of the valve block to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system during disassembly.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the electrical connector from the 4th spool slice.
Remove the Spool Slice
Remove the hydraulic lines connected to the 4th valve. Remove the long tie-rods or mounting bolts that hold the modular valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty 4th electric spool slice.
Install the New Valve
Insert the replacement spool slice, ensuring that new O-rings/seals are placed between the slices to prevent internal leaks.
Reassembly
Reinstall the tie-rods and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.
Programming/Calibration
Modern Massey Ferguson electric spool slices must be programmed and calibrated to the tractor's ECU. This requires a dealer diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or Massey Ferguson EDT/Wintest software).
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 0A.4X.29 code from the dashboard/ECU. Start the tractor, check for leaks, and test the operation of the 4th remote valve.
