Issue description
Triggered when the tractor's onboard diagnostic system detects an anomaly in the circuit or operation of the 5th rear remote auxiliary hydraulic valve. The underlying condition is typically an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power at the solenoid) or a mechanical/hydraulic issue (such as a sticking spool or implausible position sensor reading).

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate External Valve 5 in the rear remote stack. Inspect the solenoid electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Harness Check: Trace the wiring harness from the valve back to the main loom. Look for rub points, melted insulation, or breaks that could cause an open circuit or short to ground.
Coil Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. Compare the reading to a known good valve on the same stack (e.g., Valve 4). An infinite reading indicates an open coil; a reading near zero indicates a short.
Ground Integrity: Verify that the ground circuit for the valve stack is clean and tight.
Mechanical Check: If the electrical circuit is sound, check if the valve spool is physically binding due to contamination in the hydraulic fluid.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the hydraulic levers/buttons to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness from the solenoid on External Hydraulic Valve 5.
Solenoid Replacement (If electrical failure)
If the diagnostic tests pointed to a failed solenoid coil, remove the retaining nut at the end of the spool, slide the old coil off, and install the new one.
Valve Replacement (If mechanical failure)
If the spool itself is damaged or sticking: Clean the area around the valve stack thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Unbolt Valve 5 from the hydraulic remote stack (have a catch pan ready for hydraulic fluid). Install the new spool valve assembly, ensuring all O-rings and mating seals are properly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid. Torque the stack tie-bolts to the OEM specification found in the service manual.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the valve.
Testing
Start the tractor, top off the hydraulic fluid if necessary, and operate Valve 5 to check for proper function and ensure there are no leaks.
Clear Codes
Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.52.21 fault code from the Autotronic ECU.
