Massey Ferguson 0A.61.22 – Autotronic module or Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote (EHR) control unit: External Hydraulic Valve 6 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the circuit, solenoid, or mechanical operation of the 6th external hydraulic remote (spool valve). The system has detected a fault such as a connection problem, an open circuit, a short to ground/power, or a mechanical condition where the valve is not responding correctly to electronic commands.

Check the cause

  1. Check the solenoid connector on Valve 6 for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness for rub points.

  3. Test the solenoid coil resistance with a multimeter to ensure it is not open or shorted.

  4. Check if the spool valve lever or electronic actuator is physically sticking (spool valve detents have a known habit of rusting up).

  5. Ensure the hydraulic oil level is correct and the oil is not heavily contaminated.

  6. Check the hydraulic/transmission oil filter, as a blocked filter can cause pressure issues that mimic valve failures.

  7. Look for external leaks around the valve block or internal bypassing (which causes weak hydraulics or implement drop).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, relieve hydraulic pressure by moving the remote levers/joystick, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Access the Valve Block

    Locate the external hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor. Identify Spool Valve 6.

  3. Wiring & Solenoid Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring fault, repair the harness. If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, unbolt the retaining nut on the end of the spool valve, slide off the old solenoid coil, and install a replacement.

  4. Mechanical Cleaning / Seal Replacement

    If the valve is sticking due to rusted detents, carefully remove the spool valve assembly. Clean the detent mechanism and replace the return springs if broken. If the valve is leaking, disassemble it and install a new spool valve seal kit (O-rings and seals).

  5. Valve Replacement (Worst Case)

    If the valve block is internally scored, heavily rusted, or the detents cannot be salvaged, the entire electric spool slice must be replaced. Unbolt the slice from the hydraulic stack, install the new valve with fresh O-rings between the slices, and torque to spec. (Note: Some electronic spool slices may require programming/calibration to the tractor via a dealer tool after installation).

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the battery, top up the hydraulic fluid, start the tractor, and check for leaks. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.61.22 fault code.
